C-23 is our pvd-applied face coating reducing friction and wear while offering better hear transfer and is compatible with most cylinder materials and cylinder coatings.

C-69 is our pvd-applied face coating reducing friction and wear while offering better hear transfer and is compatible with most cylinder materials and cylinder coatings. Option on M2 Tool Steel Rings.

C-72 is our pvd-applied face coating specifically engineered for hard-coated cylinders it offers the same performance gains as C-23 with exceptional long term wear characteristics.

C-33 is out pvd-applied chrome nitride [CrN] face coating for those looking for the same characteristics as a chrome faced ring but without the seating problems commonly associated with chrome.

C-47 is our side coating used on the top and bottom ring flank offering exceptional ring to ring groove lubricity helping to eliminate micro welding. It is the standard side coating supplied with our Diamond Finish rings.

C-92 is our PVD face coating reducing friction and wear available on Gold Finish ring sets.

Total Seal coatings are available on Diamond Finish, TNT, AP, Gold Finish and M2 Tool Steel top rings.

The Need to Measure Surface Roughness

The reason we need to measure the surface finish is that purely relying on recommended stones, feeds and speeds may not achieve the desired results. The only way to be sure is to measure the surface using a profilometer.

The most common surface roughness measurement used is Ra.

Ra Averages the Peak and Valley of Displacement

Ra averages the peak and valley displacement from a mean line but provides no information about the height of the peaks and the depth of the valleys or the ability of the material to bear a load. Two different surfaces may have a similar Ra yet have two functionally different characteristics.

    Achieving a Proper Plateau

Piston rings ride on oil just like bearings on a crankshaft. It is imperative that we create a cylinder wall finish that is a proper bearing surface. If this is not achieved it can result in excessive blow-by, oil control problems, and/or premature piston, ring and cylinder failure.

    Plateau Comparisons

    No Plateau

    Nice Plateau

    The Numbers That Do Matter

Rpk Rk Rvk. These are the measurements that need to be used when checking cylinder finish. These numbers allow us to determine if the cylinder has the ability to bear a load.

Rpk - Reduced peak height measures the portion of the surfaces protruding peaks that will wear during initial loading.

Rk - Core roughness depth is used to describe the portion of the surface that will support the majority of the load.

Rvk - Reduced valley depth, (valleys projecting through the roughness core profile) is the oil retaining portion or the troughs machined into the cylinder surface.

    TESTIMONIALS

"Total Seal Piston rings have been an integral part of the winning combination at Mark Burch Motorsports since its inception in 1994. Having our 360 engine program in house has enabled us to develop a winning combination with success from Little Rock to Knoxville and everything in between. Advancements in materials and manufacturing have provided us an advantage in both performance and reliability.

Taking a brand new engine to I-80 Speedway earlier in the year was of no consequence and we parked the 1m sprint car in Victory Lane with Danny Lasoski behind the wheel. That engine combination would provide additional victories throughout the season with never so much as one trip to the dyno. Having 100% confidence in your piston rings allows you to do things like that. Not only has Total Seal provided us with a superior product, they have guided us in new directions with cylinder finishing so that our ring pack seals correctly, fast and lasts a long time. We have had our 360's go as many as 28 races without a rebuild and it is no problem for our 410's to go a dozen shows with no decrease in leakage or performance.

The level of service provided by my sales representative, Kevin Studaker is top notch. Order fill time is usually the same day or next day which is incredible considering all of the different combinations and sizes out there. I highly recommend using Total Seal Piston Rings. It is the only ring package I will ever use."
